{Easy} Veggie Wash / Sponge Wash / Drain Wash and Lemon Peel Vinegar

Today my prince needed washed lettuce for the daily salad he takes for lunch, my sponges were dirty, the fridge needed a wipe, and I had some lemon peel vinegar ready to decant. ALL AT ONCE it became vinegar day.

Vinegar kills bacteria.

Here are a few of the ways I used vinegar today to clean and disinfect our home. All are easy.

I washed our lettuce in a large bowl with a couple of glugs of distilled white vinegar, water, and ice for about 20 minutes to remove bacteria and residual pesticide. I rinsed and drained in a strainer for a couple of minutes...

...dried the lettuce on a clean dishtowel,

and stored the disinfected leaves, wrapped in paper towels, in a plastic bag.

Since the vinegar was already out, I disinfected our sponges -- three minutes in the microwave, on high.

...then I gave them a sunbath on the patio.

There was the jar of lemon peels on the counter that had been soaking in vinegar for a couple of weeks.

I gave it a shake and a sniff...a heavenly scent ascended, so I decanted it through a strainer into a small canning jar, and discarded the peels in the compost bin. This is the first time I've made lemon peel vinegar. I use homemade orange peel vinegar to clean our oak floors, and that is what I'm going to do with the lemon vinegar this weekend.

Now it was time to clean the drains.

I poured some baking soda into our sinks -- all of them...

...followed by the vinegar water from my lettuce bath. There is a satisfying bubbly reaction when vinegar and baking soda collide...bubbly and scrubbly -- all the way down the drain.

As long as the baking soda and vinegar were out, I wiped out the fridge and ran a quick wash to clean the dishwasher, using -- what else --  but baking soda and vinegar ? Yep.

And it was all so easy.
